Whitney Kummer, OTR/L
Whitney Kummer is a FOCUS Fort Myers occupational therapist with an innate drive to help others.
After graduating with a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2017, the Lakeland, FL native worked at Lee Memorial Hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation unit, treating patients with traumatic brain injuries, strokes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating conditions. She joined the FOCUS team in January 2019.
Working with children, she says, has been especially gratifying.
“Children are like sponges, with a natural desire to learn through play that is so fun to capitalize on,” Kummer said. “I love that the occupation of a child is to play, and it is key to getting great outcomes in therapy. Seeing children overcome obstacles and be able to complete tasks that they were previously unable to complete is so rewarding.”
Her therapy philosophy is to always ensure the child is engaged with fun and play – which after all is the “occupation” of children.
“The child should feel this is play time, not therapy,” she said. “I want them to be excited about their sessions.”
While she enjoys treating children with all diagnoses, she hopes in the future to tailor her focus more toward autism. She currently conducts Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) testing at FOCUS. She’s felt at home working with the multi-disciplinary team at FOCUS.
“Working at FOCUS feels like you’re working with your family,” she said. “It’s a safe place to collaborate with your co-workers and the perfect setting for connecting with the patient’s family as a whole.”
Whitney also loves spending time at the beach with family, including husband Jonathan, son Judah and daughter Emma. Jonathan Kummer, is the Next Generations pastor at Ocean Church, where the family devotes much time and energy to the youth programs.
