Celia Burke, OTR
Celia Burke, a registered occupational therapist with FOCUS since 2021, earned her M.S. OTR from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2020. Trained in relationship-based Floortime therapy, she values the rapport built with both patients and families.
“It’s the simple connections during therapy such as smiles, laughs, and hugs that make my day at the clinic,” she said. “Also being able to connect with the families and provide them with resources and techniques to help them understand their child’s needs and make their life easier – all of that makes the job very rewarding.”
Although occupational therapy was always a career toward which she gravitated, Celia’s own lived experience of taking her own child to therapy moved her to wanting to support other families in ensuring their kids received the kind of personalized therapy that would allow them to thrive.
“I strive to work not only with the child, but with their family too,” she said. “The team approach and collaboration is what yields success.”
She has a unique knack for helping with kids who have ASD, ADHD, sensory processing disorders and ocular motor disorders. A native of Cuba who grew up in Miami, she seizes every possible chance to incorporate nature in her sessions.
“Being outdoors is therapeutic, and I like to incorporate nature-based activities in my treatment sessions whenever I can.”
Following the lead and natural curiosity of each child, she aims to make sure every occupational therapy session is fun, engaging and functional.
“FOCUS is a great place because we truly work as a team to serve the children in a holistic way,” Celia said. “I also love that at FOCUS, the kids always come first!”
During her downtime, you can usually find her outside, navigating a nature trail, digging in her garden or riding bikes with her husband and 3-year-old.
